Fins and Fishes
We set sail for watery party fun. We
cooked up some fishy food, or at least decorated cupcakes
in the attempt, after all which would you rather eat. We enjoyed
many moments of watery fun and games. Watch out for the wet
sponge and octopus landings! We made our own fishing rods,
and fished for prizes in the centre “fish pond”.
The week culminated with a fishing trip to Shannon Lake
where we actually used our fishing rods to tease the fish.
Of course, the size of the fish that got away grew bigger
and bigger between the lake and the Centre, a fishy story
if we ever heard one.

Together We Are Better
A week of cooperation
and teamwork as we hiked to local parks with our parachute,
flying discs, kid version croquet set, and humungous
soccer ball to play games and enjoy McDuff Sports
days. Every activity centered around working together and
supporting each other. Highlighting the week was the Monster
Truck course building and races, and the truck building
competition. Very creative! Even the Kidz in the
Kitchen were involved, using waffles for wheels, fruit
for rims, and maple syrup for oil. A tasty adventure indeed!

Hocus Pocus
This week was ushered
in by Sam the Magic Man at the local Library. He set
the stage for the week where we learned great magic secrets,
and not so great potions as it turned out. We learned how
to do several magic tricks in preparation for the Funtasia
Magic Show on our last day of the week. ABRACADABRA!! Nothing
can be more satisfying than watching the radiant smile
of a child who has just successfully made their penny disappear
to the delight of their audience. And the creative spark
was kindled when each made their own magic box to hold
their precious props.

Self-Expression
This was an opportunity
to develop self-expression through paint, sculpture, drawing,
clay, music and food. After all, pizza faces has just got to
be one of the artistic events of the season. Each child had the
opportunity to participate in karaoke singing and entertaining
the crowd at our own rock concert, and they excelled at making
their own paint from scratch that they used to create self portraits.
And of course, the summer would not have been complete without celebrating our
annual “Tacky Tourist Day” and the annual
parade about town, although it didn’t take long before
the tacky clothing ended up in the knapsacks in favour of cool
breezes. Only the trip to the Kettle Valley Water Park and Playground
provided the much needed “refreshment” to the summer heat.

Bear Family Reunion!!
The reunion kicked off with the Teddy Bear Picnic and everyone
had their bear buddie along for every one of the games, and the
challenge of the day was finding the pots of honey hidden about
the park. Our favourite vocalist Matt Dufus joined us for the Bear
Jamboree and provided music and artistic direction for the sing-a-long
crowd. With some earlier planning and practice the Funtasia group
performed their rendition of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears for the
McBean tykes. The week ended with a mystery trip to the Grand 10
to see Underdog!!! Only Elvis had more impersonators than Underdog
did all the way home to the Centre.

Hot Hot Hot but we're Cool Cool Cool
If you were thinking this was a trip to the lake or water park,
you would be wrong. This week was about music and performance.
The children made a variety of musical instruments, if you can
call rainsticks, comb harmonicas and drums musical. Of course you
just had to see the dance and karaoke recital of “Crazy Frog” provided
for the McBean children to appreciate the talent of these young
stars. Everyone took part in groups making their own combination
fruit smoothies, which turned into a smoothie tasting event between
groups. Judging by the interest, look for this to replace wine
tours as the latest Okanagan trend. Another mystery trip to Planet
Laser, where Flower challenged The Sniper to a showdown, and we
aren’t telling who came out on top.

Under the Stars
Summer isn’t summer without camping, so we made our own version
of campout, although it looked a lot more like a cardboard village
than a campground when all was said and done. And camping isn’t
camping without smores of course. The creative kids in the centre
made colourful sand sculptures.

Safari Adventures
The Animal Olympics started off the week of adventure, but was
called half way through on the account of weather. When we couldn’t
find enough animals to satisfy, we made ‘em by creating our
very own animal rock paintings. Not to be outdone, the Kidz in
the Kitchen created their own jungle critters and swamp water.
The snake lady from Jurassic Pals slithered her collection of critters
into the Centre but the Funtasia group was just too cool to be
scared. Not cool enough to get out of playing Crazy Croquet, however.

Carnival Party
The mystery this week was a bicycle trip along the Mission Creek Greenway followed by a picnic and playground time at
the Mission Creek Park, and the inevitable bumps and bruises
along the way increased the sense of adventure. Back at the
Centre, the children made their own carnival midway with a
variety of hand-eye coordination games. And for added flavour,
the Kidz in the Kitchen made their own homemade ice cream.
